Faith, by itself, isn’t enough, James writes in his epistle.

“Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” James 2:17 NKJV

I had trouble, for the longest time, reconciling this within myself.

Growing up in the Catholic church, I was always told that all you need to do to get to Heaven was to be a good person: help the poor and the needy, be nice to people, etc. When I became born again, my paradigm completely shifted. It was more than just doing good things and being good to others; it was about showing that Christ is within you as well. It’s about showing others the light of Christ that shines within you.

It’s about leaving your old self behind. When we are born again, the old is cast away and replaced with a new spirit. As Christians, we need to embrace this and leave our old ways behind. The self-indulgence and worldly thoughts that made us who we were are cast aside for the person that has been born again by the Holy Spirit. Everything we do should be an example of this change and be something that glorifies Jesus. Be humble in your actions and when someone wants to know why you are feeding the poor or why your attitude has changed, tell them about Jesus and the work He has done in your life.

These are the works that James wrote about and that we should live to do every day of our lives.
