I know what some of you might be thinking when you read the title of this post..
“Did he go to the Kentucky Derby this year?”
“He must have attended a stock car race somewhere?”
“Did he finally enter the race for president?”
Nope, none of the above..
My day at the races was my drive into work.
Yep, you heard me right. My drive into work.
I live in the great (insert sarcasm here) Garden State of New Jersey. My typical drive is across the state on Route 195 and then south down Route 295 to my exit in Mount Laurel. The roads aren’t too crowded with cars but there are enough that things can sometimes get a bit dicey.
Especially when everyone else thinks it’s the last lap of the Daytona 500.
Every NASCAR races starts with 43 cars. They don’t always end up crossing the finish line but the ones who do are fighting for their place, trying to get one more spot ahead so that they can get a few more points than the guy who finishes behind him. During the race there can be some bumping and a lot of drafting.
Now, translate that image to my drive into (and home from) work.
I’m not a ‘fraidy cat when it comes to driving. I can keep up with the best of them. But when you’re round-trip drive is 126 miles a day, gas consumption is numero uno on your list of things to consider (along with not getting into an accident, I suppose).
Anyway, to make a long story short, my drive in is just like the last lap of Daytona…except that everyone else is racing and I’m the guy at the bottom of the track, with a blown tire, just trying to make it back to pit road in one piece.
Okay, that’s it for me in this installment. I thought I would break from my usual subject matter and post something a bit lighter. Don’t worry…I’ll be back to more serious topics next time.
