I’m lucky enough that the industrial park where I work has a walking path that goes around the park. It’s about a mile for the full circuit. I try to walk it a few times a week for the exercise. Along the way, I get to see others from the area walking along the path as well. Out of all the people I pass along the way, very few of them will even make eye contact long enough to say hi. Some may be engaged in conversation with someone but neither will take a few seconds to say hi.
The highway is one of the worst places I have ever seen when it comes to the lack of consideration for others. People driving too fast, cutting people off and zipping in and out of lanes. I liked going to stock car races but they’re too expensive. The next best thing is to drive up the Garden State Parkway a few miles. They should have checkered flags at the toll booths…just kidding.
Have humans lost their humanity? Or have they lost God? I think that the latter is true and that causes the former to be true.
There are a number of different people and organizations who are trying to take God out of schools and government and society in general. Some are going out of their way to make sure that even mentioning His name is politically incorrect. When we push God out of our lives, the world takes over. We become part of what God wants us to separate ourselves from.
In his first epistle, John wrote the following:
“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, they love of the Father is not in him.” 1 John 2:15.
Paul also spoke of this in Romans 12:1.
As Christians, I think we can show people, through our own examples, that there is more to this life than beating the other person out of a spot in a crowded parking lot or cutting someone off on the highway.
Don’t get me wrong. Even after being saved, I still find myself silently competing with someone on the highway. It’s a lot less than it used to be. As humans, I know we can do and be better.
